Fish: Tipping the Scales of Intelligence in their Favor!

................................................................

I had a funny fish tale experience once - at a coffeehouse. There was a medium fish tank with one tough looking fish who was about the size of a danish. He was a purple iridescent color. We walked in, and this fish saw us and swam toward us. I looked at him, and this fish was looking at me. His eyes were fixed on me. And he would swim in perfect synch alongside me, and follow me, when I moved or walked past the tank... staring the whole time. It was a very small coffeehouse, and after we decided where to sit, he just parked himself right there on that side of the fish tank. He was behind me. Staring at the back of my head. It was surreal - this was a really intense fish - and kind of freaky. I felt badly for him - so much fish in such a small tank like that. We asked the owner about him, and she said he was a 'character' with a 'big personality.' He didn't do this to my friend, just me. He could have been on the Sopranos.

One thing was for certain: this was one extremely intelligent fish...

Research is finding that fish are much smarter than once thought. Minnows can learn to navigate mazes... goldfish are smarter than trout... fish remember for months and more... even in tanks with no hints - they "know" when it's time for lunch... smarty fish...

Must see: An Elephant and a dog who are inseparable friends...

................................................................

On the elephant sanctuary, all the elephants have their best friend. Tarra's best friend is a dog, named Bella. They are inseparable. They eat, sleep, and play together. Tarra even rubs Bella's belly with her foot. Recently, when Bella was ill and unable to come outside, Tarra stood vigil, waiting as close as she could to the building. Inside Bella was temporarily paralyzed, unable to walk, or wag her tail. After three weeks, one of the sanctuary workers decided to carry Bella out to see Tarra. When Bella saw Tarra, her tail started wagging. They visited every day until Bella got better.

What does eagle eye really mean?

..................................................................

Eagle eye means that if you had the vision of an eagle, you could read a newspaper from across a football field.

"Not bad, eh?" Says a jokingly bespectacled eagle...
"Where's my tea? I always like to have a delightful, fragrant cuppa while I peruse the paper... "

"Margaret! Where's my tea!"

The pups woo-wrule: How do dogs top all other mammals?

................................................................

Pups, dogs - sooo cute, so many kinds!

Yes, thanks to a human love for expression, variety, curiosity, and experimentation: there are more breeds/types of dogs (400 +) than any other mammal.

All dogs came from the woof! I mean, the wolf...

Apparently, some wolves were more gentle, and easier to tame.

Dogs can be genetically traced back to The East/The Orient.

And dogs have not only given us great companionship; they have also helped us survive, by protecting us, our property, the fruits of farming...

Google Cows (and Whales) : Black and White and Pointing North All Over

..................................................................

From the Milky Way of satellites Google Earth has unearthed yet another milky way mystery: cows like to align themselves with the earth's magnetic field.

German zoologists Sabine Begall and Hynek Burda of the University of Duisburg-Essen studied photographs of 8,510 cattle in 308 herds from around the world, and found two out of every three cows were pointed in a North-South direction, like grass-munching compass needles. (Although they couldn't decipher heads from tails - all cows know that both of their ends of are important.)

Field studies of red and roe deer in the Czech Republic, revealed similar findings.

For some time scientists have known that certain bacteria, bees, and migrating animals like fish, birds, whales, bats, and some rodents have minute organs with magnetite in their brains, that act like compasses. But these new findings are some of the first to indicate the same could be true for larger land animals.

Caltech geobiologist Joseph Kirschvink is very interested but not surprised: "We have to remember that whales are descended from a common ancestor of cows."

That is something I have never remembered.

Whales and cows - gene pool cousins - baby whales are calfs...

The world upside down, aligns itself again, in amazing fashion.

Wildebeests migrate... I bet they're related to cows and whales too.

What does change drive?

................................................................

If it's $8,000 in change (literally - coins in 16 coffee cans), and you're James Jones - it's a new Silverado. James brought his change to a car dealership in Ohio, to make a down payment.

Now seventy, James said his old truck ran him over when the parking break failed, so it was time to get a new one.

It took an hour and half to count all the change. A former engineer by trade, James said that he doesn't like banks, and paper money will burn, so he kept all his savings in coins.

Now, that too qualifies as a time for change!
